Uttarakhand, earlier Uttaranchal, state of India, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is bordered to the northwest by the Indian state of Himachal, to the northeast by the tibet Autonomous Region of China, to the southeast by Nepal, and to the south along with southwest by the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Its capital is the northwestern city of Dehra Dun.On November 9, 2000, the state of Uttaranchal—the 27th state of India—was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, and in January 2007 the new state replace its name to Uttarakhand, meaning “northern region,” which was the traditional name for the area. Area 19,739 square miles (51,125 square km). Pop. (2011) 10,116,752.In August 2006, India's Union Cabinet assented to the four-year-old appeal of the Uttaranchal state assembly and best members of the Uttarakhand movement to name it as Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand. Legislation to that issue was passed by the State Legislative Assembly in October 2006,[13] and the Union Cabinet brought in the bill in the winter session of Parliament. The bill was published by Parliament and signed into law by the President in December 2006. Till that time, Uttarakhand denotes a state in India Haridwar is also one of the four places; where Kumbh Mela occurs after rotation of every twelve Years and Ardh Kumbh after every six years. It is said that drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell in to the Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Pauri, therefore considered that a dip in the Brahmakund on this particular day which is very auspicious and when Jupiter (Brahaspati) arrive’s to the sign Aquarius (Kumbh) once in every twelve years the Maha Kumbh fair is celebrated at Haridwar
